Dasheen was probably introduced by Chinese indentured workers. The locals couldn’t pronounce it, so they called it the Chinese plant or de la Chine from which the word dasheen emerged. They (the Africans) definitely introduced okra, just as the Spanish introduced coconuts and of course the capsicums were indigenous. History on a plate
